Frequently Asked Questions

Course Questions

Who offers the courses?

The Economic Growth, Agriculture and Trade office within USAID has offered these trainings since 2000.

Who teaches the courses?

The course is planned and facilitated by one or two training professionals from the EG Office. They enlist a team of 10 to 20 experts to present specific topics within each module. The instructors are specialists in their area and have varied careers and experience that make them perfectly suited to mentor EG officers and provide ongoing support beyond the course.

How much outside preparation should I expect?

Each course will have an agenda that you can download or refer to online. This agenda will include pre-course assignments and evening reading assignments to be throughout the course. The amount of required outside preparation time will vary by course. Agendas are subject to change.

What other courses are offered?

Currently the EG Office offers the following courses at various points throughout the year: Overview, Financial Sector In Depth Training, Economic Development in Post Conflict Countries, Trade and Investment In Depth, and Enterprise Development In Depth. The Course Schedule will list upcoming offerings as dates are confirmed for 2010.

Who can take a course?

You must be registered with USAID University before you can join the EG Learning Center companion website for the course. Each course has individual requirements and processes for receiving permission and budget approval for the time and travel that might be required of each individual participant.

Site Questions

Am I required to be registered on this site if I am a member of the course?

Yes. Online Courses will take place entirely on this site. Blended courses combine both in-person and online instructional opportunities. In-Person Only courses will use this site for logistical information, to post resources, or as a forum for participants to communicate with one another and with the instructors.

Where do I find pre-course materials?

All course readings and presentations can be found under the Materials tab after you register for the course. Course instructors usually require participants to review materials prior to Day One of the course; if you have any trouble accessing any of the files, please contact the EGLC support team.

Can I start a discussion thread of my own?

Course participants are encouraged to use the discussion section of the course. To post new topic threads click Add Discussion in the Discussion tab window. Please give your discussion a short, descriptive topic. Users who begin new discussions are also able to post, embed, or link to video and other media through the provided fields. Additional information is provided in grey text below the fields.

What if I have a resource to recommend?

Users should use the discussion board to suggest or post additional resources. The Discussion tab allows users to post, embed or link to video and other media through the provided fields. Additional information is provided in grey text below the fields.

What is the difference between "Reply" and "Post new Comment"?

In discussion spaces users can reply to the post thread or to another user's comment. If you want to reply to the overall topic of the thread, use the "Post a Comment" option at the bottom of the screen. Please give your post a descriptive subject line that informs other users of your main point.

If you wish to respond directly to another user's comment, click "Reply" directly below the comment you want to respond to. This will ensure that your comment is correctly associated with the right area and that the discussion is easier for users to follow.

What do you do with my email and personal data during and after a course?

Your contact information is required to communicate with you prior to and during the course regarding logistics and educational materials. You can add additional biographical information to your online profile if you wish, so that your fellow participants can get to know you. Each course is relatively short and intense, and it is useful to have these profiles for reference when discussing classroom material online.

Your email and other personal information will not be used for anything but course-related purposes. On occasion the EGLC will promote events and you might receive notification if the topics are related to your interests or courses you have taken. Please note: If you register for an event advertised on the EGLC site but not hosted by the EGLC, you are subject to the external site's privacy policy.

Logistics

Will I be able to access the Internet during the day-long, in-person classes?

At most of our locations we provide a few terminals to check email, etc., during lunch and breaks. However, we do not guarantee a wireless connection during the day.

What if I don't have Internet access immediately preceding my arrival or where I am staying during the course?

Please let us know if you believe this will be the case.

Do I provide my own lunch/meals?

This depends on the location. Check the Logistics tab for more information.
