Economic Growth in Post-Conflict Countries

The Economic Growth in Post-Conflict Countries course is offered by USAID's Bureau of Economic Growth, Agriculture and Trade (EGAT) and is open to USAID staff.

Goal(s): 

This training seeks to provide guidance to EG planners facing the challenges of identifying needs quickly, prioritizing, designing and delivering EG programs in a post-conflict environment.

Objective(s): 
  • Provide a forum for discussing and understanding the characteristics of post-conflict situations and economies, how and where EG programming fits within other relief and assistance efforts, and the general trade-offs that EG programs face.
  • Familiarize participants with the types of assessment tools available to identify needs and evaluate program options in each of the major EG areas, including macroeconomic environment, microeconomic reforms, enterprise development, trade and investment, the financial sector, and infrastructure.
  • Provide participants with opportunities to present and discuss the types of program options, the pros and cons and trade-offs of these options, sequencing issues, and the lessons learned from recent experience.
  • Acquaint participants with the resources available within USAID, the USG and the broader donor community to design and implement EG programs in rebuilding environments.
Topics and Descriptions: 

The agenda of the EG in Post-Conflice countries consists of five technical modules on each of the five days. Here are the modules for the week:

  • Module 1: EG Program Framework, Post-Conflict Strategy and Donor/Interagency Coordination
  • Module 2: Employment Generation, Income Generation, and Agriculture
  • Module 3: Infrastructure and Management Contracts
  • Module 4: Business Enabling Environment, Enterprise Development and Public Financial Management
  • Module 5: Money, Banking & Finance and Trade Policy and Institutions
