Economic Growth Overview Course

The Economic Growth Overview Course, now in its eighth year of offering by USAID's Bureau of Economic Growth, Agriculture, and Trade (EGAT), provides an intensive week-long curriculum covering all major areas of economic growth development assistance.

Duration:
5 days
Goal(s):

The fundamental goals of the EG Overview Course are to develop EG officers' capacities to:

  1. Identify and assess the key economic growth constraints in developing countries.
  2. Design and manage well-prioritized, practical programs to address these constraints in the field.

Objective(s):

The Economic Growth Training Program seeks to create a common and shared technical knowledge base through the EG Overview Course and subsequent “In-Depth Modules” of two-to-five days devoted to individual economic growth areas.

The EG Overview Course tries to balance both technical concepts (“theory”) and practical application: strategy and program design, review of lessons learned, outcomes targeting, guidelines for measuring and monitoring impact, and assistance implementation tools.  We cover not just the “What?” but also the “When?”, “How?”, and “With Whom?”. By the end of the EG Overview course, the participants will understand critical economic growth themes and be able to apply this knowledge in USAID field missions. They will know how and where to access technical assistance and further technical and program information for each of the major economic growth areas, by widening their networks of contacts within USAID, and building communities of shared interest.

Topics and Descriptions:

The agenda of the Overview Course consists of four core technical themes, each dominating a day, proceeding in order from the broad policy environment to the level of the firm. Here is an overview of the week:

Module 1: Macroeconomic Policy
Module 2: Microeconomic Policy
Module 3: Enablers of Competitiveness
Module 4: Enterprise Development

Prerequisites:

Six (6) presentations must be viewed online prior to the first day of the overview course. These presentations can be accessed under Materials once you are registered and logged into the course website.
